How I designed an AI-powered study group matchmaker to solve academic isolation and fragmented campus communication for university students.

The Context

This was a graded project — but I treated it as a real product problem. The brief gave me the problem space. Everything else came from applying product thinking frameworks I'd been building through hands-on practice.

University students today don't have a single place to manage their academic social life. The tools they use — WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram, physical notice boards — weren't built for academic coordination. They were built for casual conversation. The result is a student like Anjali, sitting alone at 11pm before an exam, watching her group chat flood with revision updates, feeling like she's already behind and doesn't belong. That's not a notification problem. That's a belonging problem. And that's what I set out to solve.

The Problem

When students try to organize their academic life on campus, they need to find relevant study groups quickly, but struggle because communication is fragmented across multiple noisy platforms and forming balanced groups is manual — leading to missed opportunities, increased academic stress, and social isolation.

Understanding the Users

The brief pointed me toward one obvious user — the student. But as I dug deeper I realized there were two distinct users whose needs had to be served simultaneously for the product to work at all.

👩 Anjali, 18 — The Ambitious Freshman

First year Computer Science student living on campus. Heavy smartphone user frustrated by fragmented communication. Eager to excel academically but terrified of falling behind. Opens WhatsApp at 11pm before exams and sees groupmates far ahead in revision — feels excluded and inferior. Never speaks up about feeling lost because she doesn't want to appear weak.

JTBD: Feel academically included and validated — find people who study at her pace so she never feels left behind or alone in her first year.

👨 Sandeep, 20 — The Natural Leader

Second year Mathematics & Physics student. Charismatic, loves helping people grow academically. Naturally organizes study sessions but frustrated by coordination overhead — chasing members, finding right content, managing schedules manually. Wants to focus on teaching and mentoring, not logistics.

JTBD: Build and manage a high-performing study group effortlessly — so he can focus on helping people grow instead of chasing coordination.

The critical insight — Anjali and Sandeep need each other. Anjali needs Sandeep's group to feel included. Sandeep needs Anjali's profile data to build the right group. The AI matchmaker serves both simultaneously. Without designing for Sandeep, Anjali's problem never gets solved.
